A short companion with ready scripts and example stimuli to use with the 5‑minute tracker.
Short tutor script (copy and use)
“Today we’ll do our quick skill check for [skill]. I’ll show/play the same short item we used before, then I’ll ask you to [task]. Try your best — this is just a quick check to see how you’re doing. Ready?”
Examples — pick one for the month
Listening (numbers)
Play a 30‑second announcement or short clip. Ask: “Write the three numbers or times you hear.”
Reading (sign/flyer)
Show a short flyer. Ask two facts: “What time does it start?” and “Where is it held?”
Writing (short paragraph)
Show a simple picture. Ask: “Write 3 sentences describing what is happening.”
Vocabulary (naming)
Show 10 pictures of common items. Ask the learner to name as many as they can in 60 seconds.
How to score (quick reminder)
0 = no response; 1 = needs lots of help; 2 = some help; 3 = little help; 4 = independent
Quick follow-up activities (2–5 minutes)
- If score 1–2: model the task and try one short example together.
- If score 3: ask the learner to repeat one correct sentence aloud and note pronunciation targets.
- If score 4: set a small stretch goal for the next week (e.g., add one extra item to name).
Low-prep stimulus ideas
- YouTube: short 30–60 second clips — a cooking step, a short weather blurb, or a sports highlight.
- Local flyers: library programs, market flyers, store shelf labels (photo with phone camera works well).
- Photos: real photos of town scenes, store aisles, or simple everyday objects.
Tip: Use the same stimulus each week for valid comparison.
Troubleshooting phrases to practice
“Can you say that slowly, please?”
“Could you show that step again?”
“Do you have more of this in the back?”
“Excuse me — what did the announcement say about the next set?”
